How to read a print: every named setup
- Free note
The scanner names what happened on the close. Hybrid conviction is what publishes. This note walks every registered setup — what it means, how it is scored, and why it exists.
What a print is
A daily print is an observation of the Mag7 + semiconductor tape after the US cash close. It is research, not a recommendation to buy, sell, or hold. Sell means stop adding to a long — never open a short.
The scanner can only print a named setup that already fired. A model (or the local judge, when there is no OpenAI key) then grades that same observation. Hybrid conviction ≥ 80 is the publish bar. Wait / oppose cannot publish. The model cannot invent a quiet name.
How to read today's signal
1. Named setup — the factual one-liner on the card (AAPL pulled back to its 20-day average inside an uptrend). That is what happened, not a forecast.
2. Scanner score — 0–100 closeness to the setup. Default mix is 65% setup + 25% industry development + 10% company headlines. Missing headlines score 50 (neutral), not 0. On a sell, industry and headlines invert so a weak sector raises fade confidence.
3. Hybrid — scanner blended with the judge. Labels: ≥80 preferred / ≥65 constructive / else watch. Only preferred prints go live.
4. Analog — same named setup on this desk's own history (~2300 sessions). It is a research overlay, not a timing call. A failed analog is dropped from the card; a cleared analog is a gate it passed, not an edge it proved. No named setup beat simply holding these companies after costs and clustering.
5. Invalidation — the line that would make this observation stale (SMA loss, failed break, TTM earnings turning negative).
VIX stress blocks most buy setups on purpose. The two washout buys (historic_drawdown, deep_drawdown_value) are the exception: panic is the entry, not a veto.
Why these signals
The desk already owns these names. Setups time additions (or a pause), they do not pick a new book. Each rule is a first-day onset the analog can replay: same thresholds, spaced 21 sessions apart so one long regime does not count as twenty trades.
Buy setups
pullback_in_uptrend
Meaning. The name is still in a bullish SMA regime (close above SMA50, SMA50 above SMA200) and tagged its 20-day average — a reset, not a chase.
How it is scored. Requires an uptrend and refuses RSI-overbought or VIX stress. Points for: uptrend (25), VIX low/elevated (15/8), RSI 14 in 35–58 (15), close within about −4% to +1.2% of SMA20 (15), 21-day relative strength vs SPY > 0 (15), decent volume, optional bullish divergence and volume dry-up. Needs 40+ to exist.
Why. Mean-reversion inside a living uptrend is the cheapest scheduled add the tape offers. It is the desk's default "don't chase the high" buy.
pullback_and_rs
Meaning. The same pullback, but only if the name is also beating SPY over 21 sessions.
How it is scored. Hard-requires 21d RS vs SPY > 0, then reuses pullback_in_uptrend. Not a runtime AND of two published cards.
Why. Relative strength keeps a pullback from being a laggard that is merely cheap versus itself.
cheap_vs_industry
Meaning. A large Mag7-class name whose trailing P/E sits below the same-day industry-peer median.
How it is scored. Needs peer_valuation (TTM reported EPS, or a labeled Yahoo fallback on the live tape). Must be marked cheap and large. Points from P/E discount (40–60), size filter (15), optional 2× cap premium, VIX, RS, volume. RSI-overbought and VIX stress veto. Analog never uses the Yahoo-latest fallback.
Why. A quality name trading cheaper than its peers is a valuation observation, not a crash. Size keeps micro-caps out.
breakout
Meaning. Close sits within 3% of the 52-week high.
How it is scored. Near-high is required (22). Extra for relative volume ≥ 1.3×, bullish SMA regime, RS vs SPY, low VIX. Bearish divergence haircuts 12. VIX stress veto.
Why. Strength can persist. The card is a high-tight watch with a failed-break invalidation, not a "buy the high blindly" call.
golden_cross
Meaning. SMA50 crossed above SMA200 on this session.
How it is scored. The cross is 40 points. Close still above SMA50, RS vs SPY, and low VIX add. VIX stress veto.
Why. A slow trend-regime change. Rare enough that the analog can treat the session as a real onset.
bullish_divergence
Meaning. Price made a lower low while RSI and/or MACD histogram made a higher low.
How it is scored. RSI bullish divergence (36) and/or MACD bullish divergence (28). Overbought veto. Extra if still a bullish SMA regime, RSI ≤ 45, low VIX, or a MACD cross up. Needs 40+.
Why. Momentum was already washing out before price confirmed. Useful as a reset inside a living uptrend, not as a falling-knife catch.
volume_breakout
Meaning. Close cleared the 20-session high on expanded volume, often after a dry-up.
How it is scored. Range break (24) plus volume ≥ 1.5× (24). Dry-up, uptrend, low VIX add. Bearish divergence haircuts. VIX stress veto.
Why. A range that coils quietly and then expands is a cleaner break than a high that drifts.
squeeze_breakout
Meaning. Bollinger bandwidth was compressed; the close then cleared the upper band.
How it is scored. Squeeze-then-break is 40. Volume ≥ 1.2×, uptrend, low VIX add. VIX stress veto.
Why. Volatility contraction is a measurable coil. The expansion names the direction the tape actually took.
historic_drawdown
Meaning. Current drawdown is at least the average of this name's own largest completed pullbacks (default top 3).
How it is scored. Requires the deep_drawdown pattern. Base 55 for that historic fact. Extra if the episode is ≥ 1.2× the average, RSI ≤ 45, VIX washout (stress/elevated add points), volume, bullish divergence. Overbought veto. This buy is allowed in VIX stress.
Why. A 25% dip is not the same event on NVDA as on a sleepy staple. Own-history extremes are the washout the analog can replay.
deep_drawdown_value
Meaning. A deep 52-week drawdown (default ≥ 25% off the high) with positive TTM EPS — a real multiple still exists.
How it is scored. Drawdown is the trigger; own-history earnings yield percentile is confirmation, not a veto. Earnings-peak guard only blocks names whose EPS both sits at the top of its range and has already collapsed (the cyclical trap). Extra for deeper / severe drawdowns, historic extreme (same fact as historic_drawdown, 20), cheap or confirming EY percentile, oversold RSI, peer P/E discount, EPS still growing, and VIX stress/elevated. No bullish SMA required — price is broken; that is the point. Also allowed in VIX stress.
Why. Every other buy goes silent at a market bottom. This one is built to speak then, without promoting a name whose earnings already died.
Sell setups
Sell = stop adding / trim a long. Cover levels are invalidation, not a short entry.
death_cross
Meaning. SMA50 crossed below SMA200 on this session.
How it is scored. Cross is 40. Bearish SMA regime, negative 21d RS vs SPY, and VIX elevated/stress add.
Why. The mirror of the golden cross: a slow regime change that says the scheduled add should pause.
bearish_divergence
Meaning. Price made a higher high while RSI and/or MACD histogram made a lower high.
How it is scored. RSI bearish divergence (36) and/or MACD bearish divergence (28). Oversold veto. Extra if RSI is overbought, already a downtrend, or both oscillators diverged. VIX sell points and lagging SPY add.
Why. Momentum failed first. Fade a chase; do not treat a washout as a top.
breakdown
Meaning. Close sits within 3% of the 52-week low.
How it is scored. Near-low (22), volume ≥ 1.3×, not a bullish SMA regime, lagging SPY, VIX sell points. Bullish divergence haircuts 12.
Why. Mirror of breakout. A failed breakdown (reclaim of the low) is the invalidation.
volume_breakdown
Meaning. Close lost the 20-session low on expanded volume.
How it is scored. Range break (24) plus volume ≥ 1.5×. Dry-up, downtrend, VIX sell points add. Bullish divergence haircuts.
Why. Mirror of the volume breakout — a coil that resolved lower.
squeeze_breakdown
Meaning. Bollinger bandwidth compressed; the close then lost the lower band.
How it is scored. Squeeze-then-break is 40. Volume, downtrend, VIX sell points add.
Why. Same coil as the squeeze breakout; the tape chose down.
bounce_in_downtrend
Meaning. The name is still under SMA200 with SMA50 below SMA200, and RSI bounced (50–72) near SMA20 — a bounce, not a washout.
How it is scored. Requires a downtrend and close below SMA200. Oversold and bullish-trend veto. Points for downtrend (28), RSI bounce (18), SMA20 tag, lagging SPY, VIX, bearish divergence, SMA20/50 cross down. Needs 40+.
Why. Mirror of pullback-in-uptrend. A bounce inside a living downtrend is where scheduled adds should stay paused.
What this desk will not do
- Invent a name that did not fire.
- Treat analog hit rate as a forecast.
- Open a short because a sell setup printed.
- Publish Yahoo-sourced tape to paying readers (production uses a licensed vendor).
Read the print. Use your own schedule. Research only.
